Selecting your shirt size should be a relatively easy process. Let's get started by answering the following question:
Do I currently have a dress shirt in my closet that already fits me well?
If "YES" ... Simply find the size label on your dress shirt. It is usually located in the inside of the shirt near the collar. Below is an example of a dress shirt tag:
As you can see in the photo above, there are usually (2) sets of numbers on a shirt label. The first number (ex. 15 1/2) is the "collar size". The second number (ex. 34 - 35) is the "sleeve length". You should be able to find a similar tag in the dress shirt that you currently own.
If "NO" ... We will want to get your "collar size" and your "sleeve length measurement". You'll need a flexible tape measure and someone to assist you in taking the measurement.
To measure your collar size: Take the measurement around the base of your neck and add 1/2 inch to the measurement; this is your "collar size".
13 - 13.5
14 - 14.5
15 - 15.5
16 - 16.5
17 - 17.5
18 - 18.5
19 - 20
21 - 22
23 - 24
To measure your sleeve length:
A. Base of neck (backside, center) B. Outside tip of shoulder C. Outside bend of elbow D. Wrist or the point at which you prefer the cuff to end
1. Rest your hand on the side of your hip, with elbow bent.
2. Measure as shown in the illustration: - Start at (A) the backside base of the neck, - past (B) the shoulder, - around (C) the elbow, - to (D) the wrist or the point at which you prefer the cuff to end.
The path of the tape measure should follow the outside of the arm.
COMMON MISTAKES WITH SLEEVE LENGTH: Some gentleman will measure their "sleeve length" incorrectly because they will start their measurement at the "top of the shoulder" instead of starting at the "middle of the back / bottom of neck". This can often reduce several inches from your correct measurement. When this happens, gentleman will sometimes order a 30/31 sleeve instead of the desired longer sleeve length.
For reference, here are some general sizing guidelines regarding "shirt sleeve lengths":
30/31 sleeve = usually 5'5" or shorter 32/33 sleeve = usually 5'6" to 5'9" 34/35 sleeve = usually 5'10" to 6'1" 36/37 sleeve = usually 6'2" to 6'4" 38/39 sleeve = usually 6'5" or taller
* NOTE: obviously, gentleman come in different shapes and sizes so the above guidelines may not be 100% accurate for everyone; however, it does serve as a good general guideline
CLASSIC FIT vs. SLIM FIT:
Slim fit shirts typically have "darts" in the back, which are two crescent-shaped lines on either side, which allow the shirt to taper closer to the body. The back panel of these shirts is usually cut on a slight curve, bringing it in slightly at the shoulders and the back so the shirt is fitted closer to the body. The arm holes of a slim fit shirt are also usually slight higher and the circumference of the arms are usually slightly tapered. In general, athletic guys tend to like slim fit shirts; whereas, larger gentleman prefer the comfort of a classic fit shirt.
