Not Just for the Guys
Working at a formal wear rental store for the majority of my younger life, I often encountered women coming in the tuxedo store requesting a tuxedo. Unfortunately, only men's tuxedos were available in the store. The option was to do crazy amounts of alterations on the guy's tuxedo in efforts to have it fit on a woman's build This was not the ideal situation.
The solution was the find a women's tuxedo designed specifically for a woman -- improved fits, better designs, stretch fabrics and a women's size scale. More recently, several designers are beginning to focus more on women's tuxedos. Two notable designers are Renata Como and David Tutera.
Renata Como is a new designer label focusing on women's formal wear. All Renata's fabrics are sourced from Como, Italy and proudly cut, assembled and sewn in Philadephia, PA. Fabrics include solid gabardines, woven lace and exotic blends.
Another designer, well-known in the wedding planner space, is David Tutera. David has created both a shawl lapel and peak lapel women's tuxedo available in either black or diamond ice.
