Cruise
So you need a tuxedo for an upcoming cruise? You want something formal, but still comfortable. This is why you should consider wearing a stylish tuxedo; after all, you want to look your best and there is no better way to do that than wearing a tailored tuxedo.
Many people take cruise vacations for rest and relaxation. Check the weather conditions prior to travel, and consider the ship's port, voyage route and final destination.
Most evenings your cruise line will have a casual dress code, but there will be evenings where specific events call for an elegant, formal evening. This is where your tuxedo comes in handy – as a guest you will have the opportunity to showcase your more elegant attire. These dress codes are the reason why you should be prepared on your cruise; you want to always fit in with the theme, but not overdo it.
Bring at least one long-sleeved sweater or lightweight jacket—because at-sea winds can turn brisk, and you'll want to comfortably enjoy whale-watching, stargazing or land-spotting from the top deck. Additionally, consider leisurely activities you may enjoy on your cruise ship, such as salon and spa services, card games, shopping and gambling. Choose two outfits that can be easily mixed and matched for these on-board, leisurely experiences.
But what about women? Women traveling on a cruise may find it challenging to determine what they should wear in advance, but should consider their cruise line's specific luggage requirements, because quantity and weight are often carefully restricted. Cruise-outfit planning prior to ship departure requires extra time and preparation. However, packing efficiently can help ensure that fashionable and functional outfits are available for the duration of your cruise vacation.
Cruises offer plentiful dining options and nighttime entertainment. Before you depart, check the cruise-line's website for a complete list of restaurants and dining dress codes. Denim is often not allowed, so prepare with several casual dress options. Dresses are easy to pack, and they are versatile for many dining occasions. Discover if your ship offers a fine-dining, black-tie event. If so, you may need to pack a cocktail dress and high heels. Additionally, consider dining in outfits that translate well to post-dinner cruise-ship activities, such as art auctions, comedy shows, musical entertainment and ballroom dancing.
Wearing a casual dress and heels or ballet flats will coordinate perfectly in all nightly settings. If you want to maximize space in your luggage, bring several statement-making necklaces and two neutral-toned sweaters to promote dress versatility with a refreshed look.
Tips for Dressing for a Cruise
Start by packing plenty of casual wear. Shorts, t-shirts, slacks, trousers, casual skirts, blouses and sundresses are all perfect during the day, whether indoors or out. For lounging by the pool, pack two bathing suits and a pair of casual shoes, e.g., flip-flops, sandals, or sneakers. You'll also need some casual shorts and a couple of t-shirts or a cover-up for getting to and from the pool areas.
When it comes to those formal evenings, you can pack a tuxedo, but tuxedos can also be replaced with a business suit these days. On some ships, you can rent tuxedos. But, for most folks, we'd recommend that you do pack at least one suit and a tie because some onboard alternative restaurant is so elegant that you really will feel out of place without them. But you can choose a style that works for you.
There are many different style options to choose from. Go for a classic tuxedo, as this means you’ll be looking formal enough for an event, but you are not going all-out to make a style statement. After all, on a cruise ship, you simply want to look good, and not take part in a fashion show.
Regardless of the outfit you choose, don’t forget the shoes to match. Otherwise, on non-formal nights, the khaki uniform works well. Recommended attire for your cruise includes a white or ivory dinner jacket with black tuxedo trousers.
So, to recap, make sure you pack the following:
- Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women
- Smart Casual: Jackets and ties for men, dresses or pantsuits for women
- Formal: Suits and ties or tuxedos for men, cocktail dresses for women
